Herman Jacobus Cornelis Voorwald took over as the dean of the Paulista State University (Unesp) on January 14. A professor from the Engineering School on the Guaratinguetá campus Voorwald was vice dean under Marcos Macari, who headed up Unesp between 2005 and 2008. The new vice dean is Julio Cezar Durigan, from the School of Agrarian and Veterinarian Sciences in Jaboticabal. According to Voorwald, the priorities of his term in office will be to build up the teaching staff again, which has been depleted by retirements, and expand the number of students; set up a campus in the Barra Funda district in São Paulo; and consolidate the experimental campuses that were set up in 2008. An institutional development plan for the next ten years will also be developed. “We’re going to emphasize Unesp’s involvement with research activities”, said the dean.
