Two São Paulo universities have new deans. At the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), physiotherapist Ana Beatriz de Oliveira was appointed by President Jair Bolsonaro. Oliveira graduated in 2003, completed her PhD at UFSCar in 2008, and became a professor at the university’s Department of Physiotherapy the following year. Her research was focused on preventive physiotherapy, ergonomics, and the study of movement. She was the second of three nominations submitted by the institution to the federal government—physicist Adilson Jesus de Oliveira was first on the list. Both were selected through a consultation held by the university in late 2020. Ana Beatriz de Oliveira was not originally a candidate for dean, but for associate dean of extension courses. Also in January, physician Pasqual Barretti took office as dean of São Paulo State University (UNESP). Having received the most votes from the university community in October last year, he was appointed by São Paulo State Governor João Doria. Barretti graduated from UNESP’s School of Medicine at the Botucatu campus in 1981, and became a professor at the institution in 1986. He was superintendent of the university’s teaching hospital between 2001 and 2005. He has a level 2 research productivity scholarship from the Brazilian National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and primarily studies infectious complications of peritoneal dialysis. Oliveira and Barretti will both remain in office until 2024.
