New member of the Board of Trustees

Infectious disease specialist David Uip is the newest member of FAPESP’s Board of Trustees. Uip is a professor at the ABC School of Medicine (FMABC) and the School of Medicine at the University of São Paulo (FM-USP). He was appointed on July 20 by São Paulo state governor Rodrigo Garcia for a six-year term, filling the seat recently vacated by Dimas Tadeu Covas, president of the Butantan Institute and professor at USP’s Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP). The infectious disease specialist was technical director of health services at FM-USP’s Hospital das Clínicas, founder and director of the hospital’s AIDS center, and special advisor to state governor Mário Covas (1930–2001). He also held positions as CEO of the Heart Institute (InCor) at USP, CEO of the Zerbini Foundation, and director of the Emílio Ribas Institute of Infectious Diseases. From 2013 to 2018, he headed the São Paulo State Health Department. Uip managed the Coronavirus Contingency Center in São Paulo during the early stages of the pandemic and since May this year has been acting as Special Secretary of Health Science, Research, and Development in the State of São Paulo.
