Mechanical engineer Herman Voorwald, who was São Paulo State Secretary of Higher Education from 2011 to 2015, has been appointed by Governor Rodrigo Garcia to the FAPESP Board of Trustees for a six-year term. The announcement was published in the Diário Oficial do Estado de São Paulo (Official gazette of the state of São Paulo) on August 17. Voorwald will fill the seat vacated by Vanderlan Bolzani, a professor at the Institute of Chemistry of São Paulo State University (UNESP) and president of the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences (ACIESP). After completing his bachelor’s degree at UNESP (1979), Voorwald earned a master’s degree from the Technological Institute of Aeronautics (1983) and a PhD from the University of Campinas (1988), both in the field of fatigue in high-strength materials. He is currently a professor at UNESP, where he was dean from 2009 to 2010 and now leads a research group that studies fatigue and aeronautical materials. Voorwald was previously a member of the FAPESP Board of Trustees from 2009 to 2013.
