Publishing merger

Macmillan, publisher of the journals Nature and Scientific American, and Springer have announced a merger between the two publishing companies, which will create a new group of science publications valued at over €5 billion. The German group Holtzbrinck, which owns Macmillan, will hold a 53% share in the new company. The remaining share will be held by BC Partners, the London-based company that acquired Springer for over €3 billion in 2013. The British company plans to sell its share in a public offering within the next four years. On the basis of the number of articles published, the new company will account for 13% of the market, behind Elsevier, which publishes 23% of all scientific articles in circulation. The merger is expected to be completed in the first half of 2015.
