It can take quite some time to find any sign of Brazil on the 2024 list of the 142 smartest cities in the world, recognized for offering the best transport, housing, mobility, security, water supply systems, and other indicators. In the ranking drawn up by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), the top spots are occupied by Zurich, Switzerland; Oslo, Norway; and Canberra, Australia (all three in the same positions as the previous year). The top of the list also features Geneva and Lausanne from Switzerland, as well as Singapore; Copenhagen, Denmark; and London, UK. Brazilian cities only appear at the end of the list: Brasília is in 130th place, São Paulo in 132nd, and Rio de Janeiro in 139th. The assessment includes resident satisfaction with transportation, governance, and access to green areas, schools, and medical services. First published in 2019, the annual ranking has changed over the years: Taipei, the capital of Taiwan, has now entered the top 20 for the first time—no city from the Americas achieved the same feat (IMD, November).
