Almost 150 species of trees, including the banana tree, the moriche palm, the handroanthus, the princess flower, and the tucumã palm, have inspired more than 600 songs by various artists, such as Alceu Valença, Pato Fu, Tom Jobim (1927–1994), Gildo de Freitas (1919–1982), and several Chicos (Brown, Buarque, César, and Conrado). Agricultural engineer and forest restoration expert Ricardo Viani of the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Araras campus, identified the plants and musicians in the book As árvores e a música brasileira (Trees and Brazilian music; Institute of Forestry Research and Studies, IPEF, 2023). The 442-page book contains many photographs (most taken by the author himself), stories, and information about each species, as well as the lyrics of songs and QR codes to listen to them. Freely available on the IPEF website, the book acknowledges the value of both art and nature preservation. In the preface, songwriter and guitar player Chico Lobo warns: “And the hardwood falls/ In the depths of the country […]/ Ipê and jacarandá/ Pau-de-ferro and jequitibá […]/ The Cerrado suffers […]/ The green forests burn/ Aroeira and guatambu […].” Viani also produced a 21-episode podcast with music and explanations that was broadcast on UFSCar radio and can be found online.
