On July 11, 2016, the Institute of Advanced Studies of the Sea (IEAMar) officially opened a new research unit at São Paulo State University (Unesp) in São Vicente, on the coast of São Paulo State. One of the Institute’s missions is to conduct studies on the sustainable exploration of marine resources and environmental preservation, with about 100 researchers from a number of Unesp campuses in fields such as geology, oceanography and natural resources management, as well as researchers from public and private companies. IEAMar will also offer a specialized major in marine resources and a professional master’s degree program in maritime, river and port management. The Ministry of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication has allocated R$25 million to the new institute and R$10 million to Unesp.
