A simulator that reproduces all the systems involved in the functioning of a train, such as traction, brakes, wagon dynamics, the geometry of the railway line and even visualization of weather conditions, such as sun, rain and fog, is in the final stages of development by the Mechanical Engineering Department of the Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo, in partnership with the railroad operations team from the mining company, Vale. The objective of the Virtual Reality Simulator project is to train and equip Vale’s more than 3000 engine drivers who are responsible for more than 1000 locomotives on 9863 km of railroad. While the company currently uses imported software for training, it is function-specific. The construction of the simulator with conventional equipment, such as computers, monitors and Windows or Linux operating systems, will allow it to be used for other applications in the company, such as in its port or mining units.
