Tribute to Ronald Shellard

The Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) and the Benjamin Constant Institute, both in Rio de Janeiro, have released a braille version of the book Ciência para o Brasil – Ronald Cintra Shellard (1948–2021) (Science for Brazil – Ronald Cintra Shellard). An experimental high-energy physicist and twice director of the CBPF, Shellard was one of the first to advocate for Brazil to participate in the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland. It is the first time that the Benjamin Constant Institute, which is a school and reference center for the visually impaired, has launched a braille book on a topic related to physics. The book, published last year, was edited by Antonio Augusto Passos Videira of the Department of Philosophy at the State University of Rio de Janeiro (UERJ), a researcher who frequently collaborates with the CBPF, and Cássio Leite Vieira, a journalist who specializes in the exact sciences and the history of physics. Funded by the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI), the 216-page book includes an essay on the history of high-energy physics in Brazil, a profile of Shellard in the form of personal accounts from the organizers, and a selection of letters, interviews, and articles about his work on science policy and science communication. The book is available free of charge on the CBPF website.
