The greenish luster of yellow patches in the midst of nearly 600 types of bacteria originating in the Antarctic region demands attention. They are bacteria of the genus Cellulophaga, found at the bottom of the sea in combination with sea sponges, and they are now being cultivated in the laboratory of Valeria de Oliveira, at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). “According to available information, the reflection is caused by the way the bacteria grow, one on top of the other,” explains biologist Tiago Rodrigues, who is looking for molecules with biotechnological potential and analyzing the morphology of the microorganisms from the frozen continent.
