Sandro Valentini is a professor at the School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in AraraquaraPublic domain imageThe governor of São Paulo State, Geraldo Alckmin, appointed pharmacist-biochemist Sandro Valentini as president of São Paulo State University (Unesp) for a four-year term to replace current president Julio Cezar Durigan. He also appointed mathematician Sergio Nobre as vice president. Valentini, 52, graduated from Unesp with a degree in pharmacy-biochemistry. He is full professor of microbiology and molecular biology at the Unesp School of Pharmaceutical Sciences in Araraquara, where he served as director.
Valentini earned his PhD in biochemistry and did his post-doctoral work at Harvard University. He has written 75 articles in indexed journals and was a grantee of the FAPESP Young Investigators in Emerging Institutions program and coordinator of two thematic projects. Nobre, 59, is a graduate of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and is now the director of the Rio Claro Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences (IGCE) at Unesp. He has a PhD in the history of mathematics from the University of Leipzig, and did post-doctoral work at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He is also full professor of the history of mathematics. Valentini and Nobre will take up their new positions on January 16, 2017.
