Civil engineer Vahan Agopyan, São Paulo state secretary for science, technology, and innovation since 2023, was awarded the title of professor emeritus by the University of São Paulo (USP) on June 30. The distinction is granted to retired faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to teaching and research or who have played a significant role at the university. Since it was founded in 1934, USP has awarded just 20 such titles. Born in Istanbul, Turkey, in 1951, Agopyan earned his undergraduate and master’s degrees at USP’s Polytechnic School and completed his PhD at King’s College, University of London. He has served as director of the Polytechnic School, science and technology coordinator at the São Paulo State Department of Economic Development, and USP’s dean of graduate studies, vice dean, and from 2018 to 2022, dean of the university. He was also a member of the FAPESP Board of Trustees from 2000 to 2012.
