Versatile sphere

When suspended in a liquid, cultured cells form clusters known as spheroids. A dye used to mark their ability to initiate a variety of cell types—known as pluripotency—shows the stem cells in pink, with their nuclei in blue. Biologist Sirlene Rodrigues is working on transforming these cells into cardiac cells with the aim of developing cellular therapy protocols for the heart.
