Women earning PhDs in Brazil

Women in leadership

  • A total of 21,591 researchers received PhDs in Brazil in 2017, an increase of 4.8% over the 20,603 awarded in 2016
  • Women accounted for 11,751 of them, or 54% of the total, a share that has remained unchanged since 2014
  • They have represented the majority since 2004. In 1996, men accounted for 56% of the total

Number of PhDs and percentage of the total by field and gender in 2017

  • Most of the PhDs awarded to women were in six of the nine major postgraduate fields (CAPES)
  • Women were most represented in health sciences (67%), which also awarded the highest total number of PhDs in 2017 (3,883, or 18% of the total)
  • Men were significantly ahead in engineering and the exact and earth sciences (66% of the total in both)
  • In the applied social sciences, there were marginally more men (50.6%)
