Concerned about the lack of personal protective equipment (PPE) for health professionals in hospitals, biologist Patrícia de Britto Costa decided to get hold of a 3D printer, in partnership with her colleagues from the company Plantem. With the lockdown in full effect, she took the device home and raised money online to start printing frames (photograph) and attaching acetate sheets to create face shields. The shileds were distributed to hospitals in Atibaia and surrounding areas in the state of São Paulo. This is her morning routine. She spends her afternoons writing her thesis on plant ecology.
