The Péter Murányi Foundation awarded its top prize for 2019 to the SOS Chuva mobile app, which tells users where in Brazil it is raining and how hard at any given time. The tool gathers satellite and weather radar data to provide information on current rainfall and lightning, as well as the probability of rain in the next 20 minutes. Created by meteorologist Luiz Augusto Toledo Machado and software developer Luiz Eduardo Guarino de Vasconcelos, both from the Brazilian National Institute for Space Research (INPE), with a team of six colleagues, the app has already been downloaded 100,000 times. Second place was given to agronomists Luiz Carlos Federizzi and Marcelo Teixeira Pacheco, both from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), who developed oat cultivars for subtropical regions. Pharmacologist João Batista Calixto, from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), took third place for the local anti-inflammatory remedy he developed using Cordia verbenacea extract, marketed under the name Acheflan.
