2024 FCW Award Winners

Fundação Conrado Wessel (FCW) announced the two winners of the 2024 FCW Award in the Medicine and Culture categories: hematologist Marco Antonio Zago and filmmaker Ugo Giorgetti respectively. Zago, chairman of the FAPESP Board of Trustees, graduated from the University of São Paulo’s Ribeirão Preto School of Medicine (FMRP-USP), where he also completed his master’s and doctorate. He chaired the National Council for Scientific and Technological Research (CNPq, 2007–2010), was dean of USP (2014–2017), and was São Paulo’s State Health Secretary in 2018. Giorgetti wrote and directed films and documentaries such as Jogo duro (Hardball; 1985), Festa (Party; 1989), Sábado (Saturday; 1995), Boleiros (Soccer players; 1998), Uma outra cidade (Another city; 2000), Boleiros 2 (Soccer players 2; 2006), Solo (Solo; 2010), Cara ou coroa (Heads or tails: 2012), Uma noite em Sampa (A night in Sampa; 2015), and Vestígios da eternidade (Traces of eternity; 2024). He was a resident artist with the Hilda Hilst Program at the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP). The two winners will receive R$400,000 each. The awards ceremony will be held in October (FCW, August 20).
