To eliminate bacterial and fungal buildup on toothbrushes, dental floss, and tongue cleaners, OralGift, a company based in the city of Curitiba, has released a new line of products, including cases and stands made of materials to which silver nanostructures have been added. OralGift is partnering with Nanox, a company in São Carlos, state of São Paulo. “Silver has antibacterial properties and can eliminate up to 99% of surface bacteria,” says Gustavo Simões, director of the company that developed the technology, which was named NanoxClean. “Nanostructured silver is incorporated into a ceramic material (silica), which is then added to the plastic from which the products are made.” The antibacterial cases and stands will initially be targeted at public and private school students. In a second stage, they will be available at drugstores. The technology is also used in a wide range of commercial products, including drinking fountains, hair dryers, rugs, carpets, and food packaging.
