Bendable LED screen: 1 micrometer thin and low energy consumptionMats TibornResearchers at Chalmers University of Technology, in Gothenburg, Sweden, have designed a flexible 1-micrometer-thin LED screen that could be the basis for a type of hypothetical electronic paper. The display reproduces all the colors of a standard LED screen and uses one-tenth of the energy consumed by a regular tablet (Advanced Materials, September 27, 2016). The screen is composed of conductive polymers that reflect external light, a characteristic that makes it attractive for use in sunlit places, unlike standard LED displays, which work best in darkness. However, one challenge must be addressed before industry can really adopt this new type of bendable LED: a good amount of gold and silver is wasted in manufacturing the display.
