The award for the best dissertation in 2010, granted by the National Association for Graduate Studies in Geography (Anpege), was given to FAPESP grantee Lutiane Queiroz de Almeida, for the research project “The socioenvironmental vulnerabilities of urban rivers. Hydrographic basin of the Maranguapinho River – Fortaleza Metropolitan Area, Ceará.” He worked on the research project while pursuing his doctorate at the Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences at Paulista State University (Unesp), Rio Claro campus. The objective of the research project was to analyze the risks and vulnerabilities of urban rivers in Brazil, the basin of the Maranguapinho River being used as a case study. One of the conclusions is that there is a strong relation between areas susceptible to dangerous natural processes, like floods, and city areas with poor social infrastructure.
