Joaquim José de Camargo Engler, full professor at the Luiz de Queiroz College of Agriculture (Esalq) at USP and administrative director of FAPESP, has received the Research Personality award given by the Campinas Institute of Agronomy (IAC). The ceremony took place on June 26, 2014, as part of the commemoration of the 127th year anniversary of the IAC. “I am greatly honored to receive this award, especially because the IAC has been dedicated to research in Brazil for more than 100 years, done important work, and earned an international reputation,” Engler told Agência FAPESP. “The IAC was also where I did my first professional work, when I was still an agronomy student at Esalq. I studied at the IAC from 1961 to 1963 and was able to observe the quality of the work done there.” In the Researcher category, the award recipient was Maurilo Terra, of the Fruits Center at the IAC. In the Public Servant category, the winner was Valéria Garcia, of the Sylvio Moreira Citriculture Center at the IAC. Businessman Dorival Finotti won the award in the Rural Producer category. The Franz Wilhelm Dafert medal was given to five recipients: the IAC Center for Engineering and Automation, the IAC Proficiency Trial for Soil Analysis Laboratories for Agricultural Purposes, the Integrated Center for Agrometeorological Information (CIIAGRO), the IAC Sugarcane Program, and IAC Post-graduate Studies Department.
