Chemistry in bloom

Fotolab_final-cristais-vinhoThe deposits that appear during the process of wine fermentation are worth examining more closely. The crystals that form due to the presence of potassium bitartrate, a substance found in grapes, can resemble to be a bed of roses.  The image is part of the senior project of chemist Luis Brudna Holzle, who is using visual impact to teach and publicize his discipline on the Internet. “I look for images in chemistry that can provide explanations and then try to infuse some beauty into the photos,” he says.  The results can be seen at: emsintese.com.br and imagens.tabelaperiodica.org, sites maintained by the Federal University of the Pampa (Unipampa), in the Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul. Since the project began in 2008, over three million people have visited the sites.
