Chile’s Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation (MCTCI) formed its first Council of Children and Adolescents with the aim of understanding their perspectives and incorporating them into government plans and programs. Aisén Etcheverry, head of the MCTCI, Verónica Silva, undersecretary for children, and Andrea Osorio, head of general education at the Ministry of Education, presided over the Council’s inauguration ceremony, held at the Palácio de La Moneda (the country’s government headquarters) at the end of June. “Adults are used to developing public policies, programs, and initiatives believing that we have the answers to the needs, interests, and ideas of children and adolescents, and we rarely take on the challenge of implementing more and better spaces for active listening,” said Etcheverry in a public statement. The first group of 16 members from the Explora, Mineduc Cosoc, and Mejor Niñez programs have come together to form the National Council, which comprises gender parity and regional representation and will last for two years.
