The Polytechnic School of the University of São Paulo (Poli/USP) will begin offering a set of electives in complex system engineering to new undergraduates who enroll in 2014. In Brazil, the subject matter is still limited to the sphere of basic research, although it has gained ground worldwide over the last decade, with applications in areas like health and economics. “If a culture aimed at the technological development of this field is not promoted, Brazil runs the risk of falling behind countries like China and the United States, which have been investing in complex engineering systems,” concludes physicist Constantino Tsallis, coordinator of the National Institute of Science and Technology in Complex Systems, located in Rio. Physicist Sérgio Mascarenhas, of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the São Carlos Campus of USP, has been warning about this issue for some years now. “Brazil should invest as soon as possible in the creation of undergraduate and graduate courses in complex system engineering,” he says.
