Mars

Double layer

NASA / JPL / University of Arizona The image at right obtained by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter in August 2013 shows dunes formed out of two types of sediment in the Labyrinth of Night on Mars.  The light ones are made up of ranges of stable dunes formed over long periods or in the distant past when the Martian atmosphere was different.  The newer, darker dunes are active and formed from sediment containing fragments of volcanic origin.
