Falling Giants

The chamber known as The Fallen Giants is found within one of the largest caves of São Paulo’s Ribeira Valley: Devil’s Cavern – also known as Gruta da Tapagem, or Mysterious Place. The name of the chamber is a reference to the two gigantic stalagmites that toppled like monumental statues when the cave’s underground river eroded the floor. The chamber lies a few hours’ walk inside the cave. It is currently being studied by a team of geologists, who are analyzing the grotto’s rock structure and evolution.
