INPAAmazon Tall Tower Observatory: data on pristine forestINPA
August 22, 2015 marked the inauguration of the Amazon Tall Tower Observatory (ATTO), a 325-meter scientific research tower in the Uatumã Biological Reserve, located between the cities of São Sebastião do Uatumã and Itapiranga in the Brazilian state of Amazonas. Equipped with sensors and radar units installed at different heights, the tower will collect data on greenhouse gases, aerosols, cloud properties and air-mass transport. This information will be transmitted to the laboratories of the National Institute for Research on the Amazon (INPA) and the Max Planck Institutes for Chemistry and Biogeochemistry in Germany, which are partners on the project. The observatory, taller than the Eiffel Tower and built at a cost of €8.4 million, is linked to the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazonia (LBA). The goal is to create a database that can feed into research studies and climate models. “The results of the measurements will be made available to policymakers as they develop regulations on environmental policy and global climate goals,” Max Planck Society vice president Ferdi Schüth told the INPA website.
