Physicist and FAPESP President José Goldemberg, 88, was named Professor Emeritus of the University of São Paulo (USP) on February 14, 2017. The distinction was granted by the University Board in recognition of his contributions to the development of the university. The ceremony took place at Bandeirantes Palace, the seat of the state government, and was attended by Governor Geraldo Alckmin, University President Marco Antônio Zago, and other officials and academic leaders. He is the 17th person to have been awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the university in its 83-year history, and was already Professor Emeritus of the USP Physics Institute (IF-USP) and the Institute of Energy and Environment (IEE-USP). “Goldemberg is a scientist with a sweeping social vision of science, and has promoted that vision at every institution he has passed through,” said President Zago during his speech honoring the physicist. As President of USP from 1986 to 1990, Goldemberg played an important role in winning autonomy for the three São Paulo State universities by negotiating a proposal with the state government in 1988 to set aside a percentage of the state Tax on Distribution of Goods and Service (ICMS) for those institutions. Joining him in the negotiation were Paulo Renato Souza and Jorge Nagle, then presidents of the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and São Paulo State University (Unesp), respectively. “I owe my education to USP, and as its president I tried to help rebuild the institution in the aftermath of the military dictatorship of 1964 to 1985,” Goldemberg said.
