PHOTOLAB

Hidden beauty

003_Fotolab_209Beauty is seen as a registered trademark of flowers, but some flower parts can also have a surprising esthetic dimension.  The larger photo above shows a grain of pollen from the flower of a rare passion fruit species: Amazonia (Passiflora tholozanii). Marcelo Carnier Dornelas, a scholar of flower formation evolution and molecular mechanisms from the University of Campinas (Unicamp), used a scanning electron microscope to take the image and then colored it using computer software.
