The 27th ceremony of the Young Scientist Award, held in Brasília, recognized relevant contributions to the topic “Water: challenges to society.” In the Graduate Student category, the winner was Gustavo Meirelles Lima, of the Federal University of Itajubá, whose doctoral dissertation in electrical engineering focused on water supply systems. José Leôncio de Almeida Silva, agronomy major at the Federal Rural University of the Semiarid Region (Ufersa), took the prize in the Undergraduate Student category for his research on adding salt water as an alternative in irrigation and forage production in Northeast Brazil. Edvan Pereira, of Ernestina Pereira Maia State School, in Moju, Pará State, was awarded the prize in the High School Student category for his paper on the use of açaí seeds to filter drinking water. The honoree in Scientific Merit was Eugenio Foresti, a professor at the University of São Paulo (USP), who has devoted over 40 years of his career to developing technologies that involve the use of water resources. For the second year in a row, USP took the Institutional Merit prize in recognition of its contribution to scientific training in Brazil. The Young Scientist award is bestowed by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq).
