Industry spending on R&D in 2022 and 2023

  • The IBGE recently released the results of its 2023 Semiannual Innovation Survey (Semiannual Pintec). The findings can be used to compare spending on research and development (R&D) by industrial companies in 2022 and 2023 and to identify the sectors that spent the most. The survey was limited to companies in the extractive and processing sectors with at least 100 employees
  • In 2022, the total amount spent on R&D by these companies was R$36.9 billion in current values, rising to R$38.3 billion in 2023, which corresponds to a nominal increase of 3.9%. In real terms, based on the average annual variation in the IPCA (Brazil’s extended national consumer price index) between 2022 and 2023, expenditure actually fell by a small amount (-0.7%)

  • In terms of the sections of the National Classification of Economic Activities (CNAE), R&D spending in the extractive industry saw a nominal decrease of 14.4%, while expenditure by the processing industry increased by 7.5%
  • The graph above shows the five sectors of the manufacturing industry that allocated most to R&D and the nominal values spent in the two years covered by the survey
  • Of these sectors, four increased the amounts they spent on R&D, with an emphasis on the manufacture of motor vehicles and pharmaceutical products and chemicals. Only one sector, the manufacture of petroleum derivatives and biofuels, reduced its R&D expenditure, with the pharmaceutical industry replacing it in second place in the ranking as a result
