Innovation Winners

014-017_Tecnociencia_203-6DANIEL BUENOThe company Amazon Dreams was the winner in the Micro and Small Businesses category of the 2012 Finep Innovation Awards. It produces bioactive compounds and natural oils using species native to the Amazon region. The company, based in Belém, in the state of Pará, was established by researchers at the Federal University of Pará. Iacit, a company from São José dos Campos, in the state of São Paulo, won the Mid-sized Company category. It develops equipment and software for air and sea traffic control, defense and meteorology. Embraer, an aircraft manufacturer, also from São José dos Campos, won the Large Company category. In the Institute of Science and Technology category, the Inatel Competence Center, in Santa Rita do Sapucaí, Minas Gerais, was chosen. It acts as a facilitator between the National Telecommunications Institute (Inatel) and companies that use the technology developed at the institute. The winner in the Sustainable Innovation category was Braskem, from the city of São Paulo, for the creation of plastics produced using ethanol made from sugarcane. In the Social Technology category, the winner was the Mamirauá Institute for Sustainable Development, based in Tefé, in the state of Amazonas, which used solar energy to collect and distribute clean water to riverine communities in the region. The company Pentop, in Manaus, Amazonas, won the Assistive Technology category with a pen for the visually impaired that comes equipped with a sensor at the tip and a processor capable of identifying texts and objects and playing previously recorded sounds. Marco Aurélio Corrêa Machado, of Campinas, São Paulo, won the Innovative Inventor category, with a digester that solubilizes materials such as steel, ceramics and paper to identify their chemical elements.
