INPE has a new director

Physicist Ricardo Magnus Osório Galvão was appointed by Gilberto Kassab, Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communication, for a four-year term as director of the National Institute for Space Research (INPE). He replaces Leonel Perondi, who had headed up the institution since May 2012. A professor at the USP Physics Institute (IF-USP), Galvão was director of the Brazilian Center for Physics Research (CBPF) and president of the Brazilian Physics Society. He graduated with a degree in telecommunications engineering from Universidade Federal Fluminense and holds a master’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Campinas (Unicamp) as well as a PhD in physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He is an associate professor of experimental physics at the University of São Paulo (USP). Galvão is a full member of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo and the Brazilian Academy of Sciences.
