DANIEL BUENOOn September 14, 2012, FAPESP and the Inter-American Network of Academies of Science (IANAS) issued a call for research proposals under the cooperative agreement signed between the two institutions. Researchers nominated by the national science academies affiliated with IANAS are allowed to take part. The proposals that are approved will be supported through financing mechanisms used by FAPESP such as Post-Doctoral grants, the Young Researcher Program in Emerging Centers and Research Assistance – Visiting Researcher. The research may involve any area of knowledge and must be conducted at universities or research institutions in the state of São Paulo. Interested parties should submit their proposals to the science academies in their country of origin, which will forward them to IANAS. Projects pre-selected by the academies will be presented to FAPESP. According to Hernan Chaimovich, special consultant to the FAPESP Scientific Board, the agreement between the foundation and IANAS will enable several objectives to be met, such as strengthening the national science academies of North, South and Central America and the Caribbean, facilitating the discovery of scientific talent, and increasing cooperation and scientific integration in these regions. “There is a very significant lack of information that prevents the best young scientists from countries in the region from coming to Brazil to do research,” he told Agência FAPESP.
