Joint efforts to battle water crisis

The presidents of the universities of São Paulo (USP), São Paulo State (Unesp), Campinas (Unicamp), Federal of São Paulo (Unifesp), Federal of São Carlos (UFSCar), and Federal of the ABC (UFABC) have organized a forum with the goal of collating research and developing new technology to tackle the water crisis in southeastern Brazil. In a letter, the university presidents invited city, state, and federal governments to avail themselves of the experience of the researchers at these universities who are studying water resources in order to better plan for adjustments to overall contingency plans. “We would like to emphasize our institutions’ role in the current water crisis and affirm that we are organized and energized to propose joint action meant to cope with the scenarios that are likely to emerge in the short, medium, and long run,” the letter says. The presidents have proposed the formation of a Technical Academic Panel on Water Resources—along the lines of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—to work together with government agencies.
