Medals in mathematics

Brazil has won 18 medals in two recent international mathematics tournaments. The 20th International Mathematics Competition for University Students, held in Bulgaria, brought together 321 students representing 72 institutions of higher learning around the world. Henrique Fiúza do Nascimento, of the Aeronautical Technology Institute (ITA) was the best placed of the Brazilian students and received a gold medal. The Brazilian students also earned 11 silver and two bronze medals at the event. The delegation included representatives from the Military Institute of Engineering (IME), the University of Campinas (Unicamp), the University of São Paulo (USP), and the Federal Universities of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Minas Gerais (UFMG) and Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Additionally, at the Mathematics Olympiads for Lusophone Countries held in Mozambique for high school students, Brazil came in first in the overall competition, earning a total of four medals (one gold and three silver). Gabriel Toneatti Vercelli, of São Paulo, won the gold medal. João Campos Vargas, from Minas Gerais, Lucca Siaudzionis, from Ceará, and Lucas Galvão de Barros, from São Paulo, each won silver medals
