Thousands of people in over 556 cities across Brazil took part in the 11th National Science and Technology Week (SNCT) October 13-19, 2014. “Science and technology for social development” was the theme of this year’s event, organized by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation (MCTI) in partnership with other agencies and private enterprise. In São Paulo, the big draw of the week took place at Parque CienTec, the science and technology park of the University of São Paulo (USP) where activities included a fossil replica workshop and a showing of short films.  In Brasília, 200 institutions from around Brazil had projects on display at Parque da Cidade (City Park). One of the attractions was a see-through car engine, used by students at the Federal Institute of Education, Science, and Technology of Pernambuco (IFPE). Another highlight was a project presented by the state of Maranhão to teach local honey producers how to use scientific knowledge to expand production. An overall evaluation of the week will have to wait, however, since activities only began in some states, like Amazonas and Espírito Santo, after Brazil’s national elections. “The number of municipalities that were involved should surpass last year’s figure of 740,” said Douglas Falcão, general coordinator of National Science and Technology Week for the Ministry.
