The open-access electronic repository arXiv will soon be upgraded and gain new features. Used primarily by physicists to share research data and submit them to their colleagues for review prior to publication, arXiv has received a $445,000 grant from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation in New York to modernize and review its programming, which is growing obsolete. This phase, which is expected to last three years, will lay the foundation for the platform’s next generation, christened arXiv-NG. Established in 1991 by U.S. physicist Paul Ginsparg, arXiv is funded by donations from libraries and philanthropic institutions and relies on around 150 volunteer moderators. In 2015, about 139 million papers were downloaded from the repository. To define the architecture of the new generation, arXiv’s leaders surveyed 36,000 users. Respondents called for improvements like the inclusion of links to full articles in bibliographic references and citation analysis tools. But they were divided about adding features typical of social media, such as allowing readers to comment on an article. ArXiv hopes to raise $2.5 million to $3 million in donations to undertake the complete overhaul.
