Printer in three dimensions

A printer that produces three-dimensional (3D) plastic pieces was presented in February at the technological event Campus Party as the first one designed and developed in Brazil. This novelty is made by the company Cliever, located in the Technological Business Incubator Unit (Raiar) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUC-RS), in Porto Alegre. The idea of the project is to create a piece of equipment that is easy-to-use, is relatively inexpensive (R$ 4 thousand), and can shape and produce polymer pieces layer by layer. It is ideal for producing prototypes of various kinds, such as experiments with robots, at either companies or universities. The software for designing the pieces and controlling the equipment is free. The project’s creator and company founder is the student Rodrigo Krug, who is doing a degree in control and automation engineering at PUC-RS. The company expects to start selling the product in May of this year.
