José Arana Varela, chief executive of FAPESP’s Executive Board, has become the first Brazilian researcher to earn the Bridge Building Award, bestowed by the American Ceramic Society. He received the prize during the 38th International Conference and Exposition on Advanced Ceramics and Composites, held in Florida. The Bridge Building Award honors scientists who are heavily involved in research in collaboration with researchers from other countries. Varela is a researcher at the Center for Research and Development of Functional Materials, one of FAPESP’s Research, Innovation, and Dissemination Centers (RIDC), where he heads the research team at the Chemistry Institute of the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp). In partnership with researchers from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), the group has developed a material using tin(II) oxide (SnO) that can detect nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a highly toxic gas.
