Strategies

Quality of publications

DANIEL BUENOThe University of São Paulo (USP) is going to centralize the services of revision and translation of the articles of its scientific journals. “We’re going to hire companies of international quality and will start offering these services to the publications,” says Sueli Mara Soares Pinto Ferreira, technical director of SIBi, the Integrated Library System of USP. At present, the editorial staff of each publication is responsible for hiring its own service providers through a public bid – a lengthy process that yields uneven quality.

The initiative is part of a set of strategies to expand the impact of the approximately 200 scientific journals published by USP units and to increase the international repercussion of the university’s scientific production. These activities are already bearing fruit. In July7, USP was ranked 15th in the Webometrics Ranking of World Universities. It is the only non-American university among the top 20. The ranking, released by the Cybermetrics Lab, from Spain, measures the presence and relevance of universities on the internet, i.e., the visibility of the scientific and academic production available on the web.
