CNPQEdgar Zanotto: research in glass nucleation and crystallizationCNPQ
The winner of the 2012 Almirante Álvaro Alberto Prize for Science and Technoloy was Edgar Dutra Zanotto, an engineer and professor at the Federal University of São Carlos (UFSCar), Department of Materials Engineering. The prize is awarded by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), in partnership with the Conrado Wessel Foundation and the Brazilian Navy, and seeks to recognize the work of Brazilian researchers in advancing science, technology and innovation in Brazil. “I was surprised and pleased to receive news of the award,” said Zanotto, in an interview with Portal do CNPq. For more than three decades he has been coordinating the UFSCar Vitreous Materials Laboratory (LaMaV), and is responsible for a number of contributions to basic and applied research relating to, for example, glass nucleation and crystallization (see Pesquisa FAPESP No. 178). From 1995 to 2005, Zanotto was deputy coordinator of exact sciences and engineering for the FAPESP Scientific Board. “I was involved in the successful conception, implementation and administration of new model programs to support research, such as the Genome, RIDC, Pipe, Consitec, Nuplitec, Scielo, and the journal Pesquisa FAPESP,” he recalled.
