UNICAMP

Food engineer Antonio José de Almeida Meirelles, known as Tom Zé, has been appointed dean of the University of Campinas (UNICAMP) by the governor of São Paulo, João Doria. The inauguration ceremony took place at Palácio dos Bandeirantes on April 19. Ze’s ticket, which included physician Maria Luiza Moretti of the University’s School of Medical Sciences as vice-dean, placed first with 51.97% of the votes in the second round of the selection process, held on March 24 and 25. Tom Zé started his life at UNICAMP as a undergraduate student in food engineering in 1976. He later earned a master’s degree in the same field at the institution and in 1987, he completed his PhD in process engineering at the University of Applied Sciences in Merseburg, Germany. That same year, he became a professor at UNICAMP’s School of Food Engineering. Tom Zé will lead the university for the next four years, replacing physicist Marcelo Knobel.
