Space-worthy chips

Launched into space on June 19, 2014, the first Brazilian nanosatellite is making history by testing and verifying the correct functioning of the first Brazilian-designed integrated circuit protected from space radiation. The nanosatellite was developed by the Santa Maria Design House (SMDH) at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), in partnership with the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) in the construction of NanosatC-Br1 (see Pesquisa FAPESP Issue No. 219). The circuit, manufactured in Germany, is being tested in the nanosatellite, whose main objective is to study the Earth’s magnetic field and its interaction with some radiation emitted by the sun and the stars. The chips developed by SMDH can now be used in the electronic systems of future satellites being developed by INPE.
