The little drop that tells all

Fotolab_Estilete_Edessa_EPGFig8A little drop of sap from the spear of a soy plant dangles over the tip of the stylets (mandible and maxilla) of a stink bug (Edessa meditabunda) that were cut into sections.  The image identifies the exact site where the insect feeds, in this case in the phloem vessels, the part of the plant that carries the sap and has positive pressure. The photo was taken by PhD student Tiago Lucini and confirms studies on the identification of specific sites in plant tissue where they feed. The studies were performed at the Embrapa Trigo EPG Electronic Monitoring Laboratory in Passo Fundo, Rio Grande do Sul State, coordinated by Antônio R. Panizzi.
