The three São Paulo state universities are joining forces to offer a groundbreaking doctoral course of study in bioenergy. Since its intent is international in scope, the program will feature professors from the University of São Paulo (USP), the University of Campinas (Unicamp) and the Universidade Estadual Paulista (Unesp), as well as foreign experts. Most of the classes will be given in English and use a videoconferencing system in order to include students and professors who are located in different cities. According to Carlos Alberto Labate, a USP professor and general coordinator of the Integrated Bioenergy Doctoral Program, classes will begin in March 2014, and students will have at least four months of training abroad. The joint doctorate is an outgrowth of another initiative, the São Paulo Bioenergy Research Center (CPPB), established in 2010 under an agreement between the government of the state of São Paulo, FAPESP, USP, Unicamp and Unesp. An affiliate of the FAPESP Program for Research on Bioenergy (Bioen), the CPPB has expanded the scientific research base in bioenergy. “The course of study is one of the most important achievements of the São Paulo Bioenergy Research Center, organized by FAPESP and by the three São Paulo state universities, with a major investment from the state government of São Paulo. Its multi-institutional nature is an excellent idea for universities and will make the course very competitive worldwide,” says Carlos Henrique de Brito Cruz, FAPESP’s science director.
