Unicamp celebrates its 50th anniversary

The University of Campinas (Unicamp) has kicked off a series of events to commemorate its 50th anniversary, which will fall on October 5, 2016. Academic, cultural, and artistic events will be held over the coming 12 months, including concerts by Unicamp’s Symphony Orchestra and faculty lectures on philosophy, art, and education for public elementary and high school teachers in Campinas, Limeira, and Piracicaba. In an interview to the newspaper Jornal da Unicamp, Ítala D’Ottaviano, chair of the events steering committee, said some activities will be undertaken in partnership with universities from other countries that were likewise founded in 1966. “We’ve been contacted by the universities in Brunel and Bath, both in the United Kingdom. We’ll be sponsoring joint events, here and in England as well,” he said. The goal is to deepen the level of cooperation between institutions and discuss strategies for the next five decades. Programming includes the release of a collection of books on the history of Unicamp, one of which will address the evolution of the Department of Nursing, today a school in its own right. Another book will tell the history of chemistry in Brazil, highlighting Unicamp’s contributions to the field.
