- One of the characteristics of patent applications in Brazil is the high percentage of invention patents that are filed by higher education institutions (HEIs). In 2023, almost 25% of patent applications by residents were filed by an HEI. As a point of comparison, in the USA, this figure is below 5%.
- The national average hides the strong regional heterogeneity of this indicator. In 10 states, the participation of HEIs is lower than the average (24.7%). In those that exceed the average, there are eight where applications by HEIs account for more than half of the total filed by all residents, and in Paraíba, the proportion is greater than 90%.
