Weight-loss drugs such as Wegovy and Ozempic can change food preferences. The drug these medications contain—semaglutide —activates glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) and helps reduce appetite. Experts from Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food, and Life Sciences and Oklahoma State University, both in the USA, analyzed the eating habits of 1,955 people divided into four groups: those who took semaglutide, those who have taken it in the past, those who planned to do so, and those who had never taken it nor intended to. People who took weight loss drugs consumed 720 to 990 fewer calories than participants in the other groups and were more willing to consume less processed foods, sugary drinks, and red meat, and more fruits, vegetables, and water. “GLP-1 agonists changes both the amount and types of food people eat,” Jayson Lusk of Oklahoma State University, one of the authors of the study, told the website ScienceAlert (Food Quality and Preference, August).
